Below, I provide and graph historical monthly median single-family home values in the United States.Importantly, this data is non-seasonally adjusted and based on sales of existing homes.. The data includes home prices from January 1953 until July 2019. There is a historical home price series using nominal prices and one adjusted for inflation.

Interpretation. Historically a house in the US cost around 3 to 4 times the median annual income. During the housing bubble of 2007 the ratio surpassed 5 - in other words, the median price for a single family home in the United States cost more than 5 times the US median annual household income.
